Cubic yards and tons for a gravel bed or base. Change the numbers and the answer updates; the starting values are only an example.
How it is worked out
- Volume in cubic feet is length times width times depth, with the depth divided by 12.
- Cubic yards are cubic feet divided by 27, then the extra percentage is added.
- Tons need a weight per cubic yard, which depends on the stone and how wet it is, so ask the supplier.
Worked example
With the starting values, a bed 20 ft by 10 ft and 4 inches deep is 66.67 cubic feet, which is 2.59 cubic yards with 5% extra. Add your supplier's weight per cubic yard to get tons.
Good to know
- Suppliers sell by the ton or by the yard; ask which one they quote.
- Compacted base settles, so a thicker layer needs the extra to be higher.
- Fields marked as read from the label have no built-in value you should trust: products differ, so use the number on yours.
